What if Plan A isn’t achievable?

As much as we’d always love to deliver our primary objective, it’s not always achievable in winter. The snow and weather conditions will ultimately decide where we go and what we do but rest assured that your experienced guide will provide a plan that works best on the day.

What skills are typically covered on a winter skills course?

Personal movement skills on snow (digging stances, kicking and cutting steps).

  • Use of ice axe whilst walking and how to prevent and stop slips and trips.

  • Use of crampons.

  • Winter navigation techniques.

  • Avalanche awareness, safe route planning.

  • Emergency procedures.

All skills are coached in context with the conditions on the day. We try to cover as much as possible. The amount of depth that we’ll go into will be dependent on the length of your Winter Skills course.

Do I need to be an experienced winter hill walker to join an ‘Skills and Summits’ event?

No, but we ask for you to have at least attended a winter skills course beforehand. These are aimed as a refresher to existing skills.
