DOYEN OF CAIRNGORM CLIMBERS, DR ADAM WATSON, WAS THE EPITOME OF THE MAN WHO KNEW EVERYTHING ABOUT CONSERVATION, THE ENVIRONMENT, WILD LIFE AND ABOVE ALL THE CAIRNGORM MOUNTAINS.

His knowledge of grouse and his favourite bird, the ptarmigan, was immense and gathered from many days spent on the high tops studying these wonderful birds.

Adam was a lover of snow – a Chionophile – his whole life was fashioned to be associated with snow. Many of his climbing contemporaries in the 1950s in the summer went to the French Alps to climb, but Adam preferred the Arctic regions – Lofoten, Norway and Finland. He had this compulsion to be near the snow.
A great achievement was his publishing of books on Deeside place names. If it hadn’t been for Adam the history of the denizens of Deeside would have been lost for ever.
His meticulous year-to-year records of snow patches in Scotland over decades is testimony to his determination to let people know how nature works.

Adam was a one-off. We’ll never see his like again.
