Skye Cuillin Munros

The aim of this course is to summit all 11 Munros on the main Black Cuillin Ridge including the infamous Inaccessible Pinnacle – The only Munro that requires graded rock climbing to reach the summit. Over 4 days you will ascend through breath taking corries and scramble along airy ridges on wonderfully rough rock to reach multiple Munro summits before descending back to sea level each evening to rest the legs for the next day. The views from the ridge are stunning, although occasionally, the Isle of Skye does live up to its Gaelic translation of The Misty Isle.

Experience moving on rough ground in the hills and a high level of fitness is essential, as is a good head for heights.

A sample itinerary for four days is shown below. Nearer the trip, your final itinerary will be discussed and agreed with the guide and will be adapted for the weather forecast. In the majority of cases, your trip will go ahead whatever the weather, however please note you may not be able to fulfil all aspects of your agenda and an alternative lower level walk or climb may be offered. You can also choose just to book one or more days subject to availability.

Day 1 –

Sgurr nan Gillean (965m), Am Basteir (935m), Bruach na Frithe (958m).

  • Ascent ~1250m

  • Distance ~14.5km

  • Duration - 6-8 Hours

The Northern 3 Munros, well seen from the drive towards Sligachan give a fantastic introduction to the ridge. A rough ascent through the coire leads to some roped scrambling up the West Ridge to the airy summit of Sgurr nan Gillean. The descent takes you down the same way with an abseil to get down the final steepening. Heading next along the East Ridge of Am Basteir to descend ‘The Bad Step’ before more easily scrambling to the summit. Now either abseil descents via King’s Cave Chimney, or back down the East Ridge to bypass the abseils on the North side of Am Bhasteir. The ridge then leads more easily to Bruach na Frithe and a pleasant descent down Fionn Choire.

Day 2 –

Sgurr nan Eag (924m), Sgurr Dubh Mor (944m), Sgurr Alasdair (993m).

  • Ascent ~1230m

  • Distance ~16km

  • Duration - 7-9 hours

A wonderful approach up glaciated slabs leads to the very picturesque Loch Coir’ a Ghrunnda. Scrambling over fantastically rough and featured boulders gets you to the main ridge where an out and back takes you to the most Southern Munro, Sgurr nan Eag. Sgurr Dubh Mor comes next before heading North towards Sgurr Alasdair. Here there are two options, either abseiling into the notorious TD gap and then climbing out via a Severe graded rock climb, or more easily detouring to ascend Sgurr Alasdair by its West Ridge to then descent the Great Stone Shoot.

Day 3 –

Sgurr a’ Mhadaidh (918m), Sgurr a’ Ghreadaidh (973m).

  • Ascent ~1000m

  • Distance ~ 9.5km

  • Duration - 5-7 hours

A bit of a shorter day to rest the body. An ascent past a steep ravine leads up into An Dorus. Here a scree path and then rocky ledges takes you to the summit of Sgurr a’ Mhadaidh. Descending back to An Dorus the ascent to Sgurr a’ Ghreadaidh begins with a steep but short climb before following slabs and ridges to the summit. A descent back via An Dorus allows a quick scree run back into the coire.

Day 4 –

Sgurr na Banachdich (965m), Inaccessible Pinnacle (986m), Sgurr Mhic Choinnich (948m).

  • Ascent ~1400m

  • Distance ~15km

  • Duration - 7-9 hours

A fine walking approach takes you to the summit of Sgurr na Banachdich before gentle scrambling takes you south towards the Inaccessible Pinnacle. A 70 meter, moderate graded rock climb will find you on top of the now ‘Accessible Pinnacle’ and an exciting 17 meter abseil will get your feet back on firm ground. Bypassing An Stac high above Coire Lagan leads wonderfully up the slabs to the summit of Sgurr Mhic Choinnich. A descent of the An Stac screes leads past Loch Coire Lagan and into Glen Brittle.
